Figures and facts

            The largest project on wildlife conservation under the grant of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) finishes the work in Russia. The GEF project "Biodiversity Conservation" is implemented within the obligations of the Russian Government under the Convention on Biological Diversity being supervised by the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation.
            One of problems to be solved under the Project was the maintenance of accessibility of the information on wildlife in Russia and possibility of its use for the most different purposes. The unique information file based on own resources, as well as on resources of the ministries, agencies, scientific institutions, international donor organizations and separate experts is accumulated during the Project. This information was permanently used for various memoranda, analytical notes, reports made under inquiries of management structures of different levels.
             It is obvious that the information and analytical potential of the GEF Project should function after its termination. Therefore, at the finishing phase of the Project, an idea occurred to organize a collective work of the open Internet community including interested information analytical structures of ministries and agencies, research institutes, high schools, individual experts and fans of the nature. Thus, one more result of the Project is a specialized Web-portal on wildlife conservation – BioDat – opened at September 1, 2002. Not only data on 700 GEF-supported projects on the wildlife conservation in Russia were placed here, but also a set of reference and analytical information which can be used for study and research, in management and in any practical activities on environmental protection.
            The BioDat is an essentially new type of information and training Internet technologies enabling scientific community and experts in the wildlife conservation to participate in formation of modern knowledge in an on-line regime through the Internet or by e-mail. Original teaching materials and handbooks were placed on the BioDat, it allows to find information, to receive consultation, to find out opinion of experts, to participate in discussion of "hot themes" of biodiversity conservation in Russia, to put the point on the map of range, to place scientific results in the BioDat, and to review materials.

What it is possible to find on the BioDat?

Results of the GEF Biodiversity Conservation Project:
· 330 HTML documents on Biodiversity Conservation National Strategy and Action Plan.
· 213 HTML documents, 323 maps and diagrams make additional information resources of the National Strategy. 
· 228 HTML documents on the results of GEF Biodiversity Conservation Project activities in reserves and national parks.
· 50 HTML documents, about 80 maps and diagrams are placed as information resources on specially protected natural areas.
The GEF Project archive consists of 11 HTML documents, 128 DOC documents, 265 ZIP archives with total amount over 800 Mb.
 

 
Catalogue of Internet and BioDat-resources is a traditional for Internet retrieval catalogue containing 1358 links to useful Web resources allocated on 154 thematic sections:

Atlas of Northern Eurasia Biodiversity
· Lists for 89 Constituents of the Russian Federation and 30 natural macroregions under 8 taxonomic groups of the Russian flora and fauna:
500 subgenera of carabus, 295 species of bark beetles, 120 species of bumblebees, 310 species of fresh-water fishes, 40 species of amphibians, 170 species of reptiles, 820 species of birds, 350 species of mammals.
Lists for regions by 8 taxonomic groups, including 23,500 species of vascular plants, were made on the base of biota inventories in reserves, which were carried out by more than 100 authors. 
· Range schematic charts for 11 taxonomic groups: 
1710 genera of vascular plants, 550 species of wood plants, 59 families of macromycelium fungus, 320 genera of lichens, 500 subgenera of carabus, 295 species of bark beetles, 120 species of bumblebees, 310 species of fresh-water fishes, 40 species of amphibians, 170 species of reptiles, 820 species of birds, 350 species of mammals.
· Game mammals:

Lists on taxonomic groups (23,500 species of vascular plants, 1,250 species of mosses, 420 species of liverworts, 4,220 species of fungus, 1,670 species of lichens, 1,460 species of moths) for regions having results of reserve biota inventory, which was carried out by more than 100 authors.
· Productivity of vegetative cover of Russia (a database with cartographic display consisting of 22 fields and 2,700 records)
